Dean Abbott is Co-Founder and Chief Data Scientist of SmarterHQ, and President of Abbott Analytics, Inc. in San Diego, California. Mr. Abbott is an internationally recognized data mining and predictive analytics expert with over two decades of experience applying advanced data mining algorithms, data preparation techniques, and data visualization methods to real-world problems, including fraud detection, risk modeling, text mining, personality assessment, response modeling, survey analysis, planned giving, and predictive toxicology.

Mr. Abbott is the author of Applied Predictive Analytics (Wiley, 2014) and co-author of IBM SPSS Modeler Cookbook (Packt Publishing, 2013). He is a highly-regarded and popular speaker at Predictive Analytics and Data Mining conferences and meetups, and is on the Advisory Boards for the UC/Irvine Predictive Analytics Certificate as well as the UCSD Data Mining Certificate programs.

Mr. Feyzi R. Bagirov is a Data Science Advisor at Metadata.io and an Analytics Instructor at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology.

Mr. Bagirov has an extensive experience as an online educator, developing and teaching courses on Data Science, Data Analytics, Game Analytics and Data Mining subjects in a number of online undergraduate and graduate programs. He has participated in the creation of the graduate Master of Science in Data Analytics at the University of Maryland University College, and was a Founding Director of an undergraduate program (Bachelor of Science in Data Science) at Becker College.

Mr. Bagirov is a former US Marine. For the past 4 years, Mr. Bagirov worked on various analytical and educational projects and startups in the United States and overseas (Azerbaijan, Tunisia, Senegal and Mozambique). Economics comedian, author, and carbon tax activist. My primary business is performing economics comedy at colleges and corporate events around the country and around the world. I am also the co-author (with the illustrator Grady Klein) of cartoon books about economics, calculus, and climate change. I was the founder and co-chair of the first-ever carbon tax ballot measure in the USA, the revenue-neutral Initiative 732 campaign in Washington State in 2016. (Unfortunately it didn't pass, but hope springs eternal!)

Daniel is a Data Scientist at Atlassian, part of the Search and Smarts Engineering group that develops search capabilities and smarts algorithms to power the suite of collaboration products like Jira, Confluence, and Stride. His current research focus is around collective user behavior tied to human collaboration and productivity. His aim is to develop datasets, insights, and experimentations to measure the success of smarts algorithms aimed to better serve relevant content, such as recommendations and notifications. Previously, he was part of the growth team and has since pivoted his knowledge of user engagement and churn towards understanding what drives the users to accomplish their tasks effectively.

A Quantitative Consultant turned a Social Data Startup Founder and now a Data Scientist, Daniel has extensive experience working with user activity data and had previously built risk models for segmenting and predicting customers at risk of participating in fraud and money laundering. Eric Dunleavy, Ph.D., is the Director of the Personnel Selection and Litigation Support Services Group at DCI Consulting Group, where he is involved in a wide variety of employee selection and equal employment opportunity/affirmative action (EEO/AA) consulting services. He is also faculty with OFCCP Institute, a national nonprofit employer association. His primary areas of expertise are in employee selection, validation research, adverse impact analyses and other EEO analytics.Eric received his M.A. (2002) and Ph.D. (2004) in Industrial/Organizational Psychology with a concentration in data analysis from the University of Houston. He received an Honors B.A. (2000) in Psychology from St. Anselm College. Eric has served as President, Vice President, and Legal Chair of the Personnel Testing Council of Metropolitan Washington, D.C. (PTC/MW), and was on the editorial board of The Industrial-Organizational Psychologist for 7 years as co-author of the "On the Legal Front" column. In 2011, Dr. Dunleavy received the first Distinguished Early Career Contributions Award - Practice award from the Society for Industrial-Organizational Psychology (SIOP). In 2015, he was elected a SIOP Fellow. Eric has published articles in a variety of journals and is co-editor (with Scott B. Morris) of the forthcoming book "Adverse Impact Analysis: Understanding Data, Statistics and Risk" (Taylor & Francis, 2017). Brandy completed her undergraduate degrees in Physics and Biochemistry at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where she was awarded the Goldwater Fellowship for excellence in undergraduate research. As a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow in Biophysics at Harvard University, Brandy specialized in single particle cryo-electron microscopy, with a focus on machine learning in automated protein structure determination.

A strong advocate for women in STEM, Brandy dedicated her time post graduate school to developing and delivering curriculum for the Boston-based non-profit, Science Club for Girls, helping to foster excitement, confidence and literacy in STEM for girls from underrepresented communities.

Matt Hayes is the Director for Baptist Health Medical Group’s Practice Optimization team, and lives in Louisville, Kentucky.  He holds a BS in Accounting and Business Administration from the University of Kansas, and an MBA in Marketing and Corporate Strategy from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business. 

A self-proclaimed data geek, Matt is Lean and Six Sigma Black Belt certified, and has spent 17+ years working in analytic functions at three Fortune 200 companies.

During this time he worked in business units including the Caterpillar eCommerce group as well has the small construction products group.  

He currently works as a Data Scientist with a focus in marketing. He has participated in projects related to cross - channel reporting, marketing attribution, eCommerce and predicting purchasing behavior in the small construction product space.

Max was a Director of Nonclinical Statistics at Pfizer Global R&D in Connecticut. He was applying models in the pharmaceutical and diagnostic industries for over 18 years. Max is the author of eight R packages for techniques in machine learning and reproducible research and is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Statistical Software. He, and Kjell Johnson, wrote the book Applied Predictive Modeling, which won the Ziegel award from the American Statistical Association, which recognizes the best book reviewed in Technometrics in 2015.

He has taught courses on modeling, including many classes for Predictive Analytics World, the useR! conference, the Open Data Science Conference, the India Ministry of Information Technology, and others.

He built up skill set working in the urban planning world, first at a consulting firm and later with an agency of the Department of the Interior. James has a PhD in cognitive psychology and computational statistics from the University of Southern California, a BA in psychology, a BA in applied mathematics, and an MS in computer science.

Olaf Menzer is a Predictive Analyst in the Global Business Intelligence and Analytics Department at Ingram Micro in Irvine, CA, United States. At the world's largest distributor of technology products, he is responsible for providing data-driven analytics and R&D solutions for tasks that pertain to internal business optimization and operations, as well as offerings to external clients. Projects he recently focused on include demand forecasting, product life-cycle modeling, inventory management and pricing optimization. Previous to working at Ingram, he was holding different Research Assistant roles at the University of California, Santa Barbara, the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and the Max Planck Institute in Germany. He was a speaker at the INFORMS Business Analytics conference in 2016 and at academic conferences in the past. Olaf received a M.Sc. in Bioinformatics from Friedrich Schiller University in Germany (2011), and a Ph.D. in Geographic Information Science from University of California, Santa Barbara (2015).

Haig R. Nalbantian is a Senior Partner at Mercer and a founder/leader of Mercer's Workforce Sciences Institute. A labor /organizational economist, he has been instrumental in developing Mercer's unique capability to measure the economic impact of human capital practices. Those capabilities have been applied in numerous projects he has directed for leading companies in the U.S. and abroad across a broad range of industries, including energy, high technology, manufacturing, consumer products, financial services, media and information services, telecommunications, and professional services. He has also consulted to organizations in the public and not-for-profit sectors. In recent years, Haig has worked extensively with high-profile organizations in the Middle East, with particular focus on strategic workforce planning, workforce strategies and metrics.

Haig came to Mercer from National Economic Research Associates which he joined in 1989. Earlier, he was on the faculty of economics at New York University and was a research scientist at its C.V. Starr Center for Applied Economics. He is an internationally recognized expert in incentives, human capital measurement and management and their links to organizational performance. He has published widely on these topics in books and articles in leading academic and professional journals, such as the American Economic Review, The Journal of Labor Economics, The Harvard Business Review, Compensation and Benefits Review, WorldatWork, among many others. His HBR article, "Making Mobility Matter," received the Academy of Management's 2010 award for "Outstanding Practitioner-oriented Publication" in 2009.

Nalbantian co-authored the prize-winning book on human capital measurement and management, Play to Your Strengths (McGraw Hill, 2004). He is also editor of and chief contributor to the book, Incentives, Cooperation and Risk Sharing and is a frequent speaker before industry groups, professional associations and academic audiences across the globe. He led the research team and co-authored the 2012 World Economic Forum/Mercer study of global talent mobility, "Talent Mobility Good Practices: Collaboration at the Core of Driving Economic Growth."

Daniel Porter is the cofounder of BlueLabs, a Washington DC based analytics, data and technology company whose clients include political campaigns, nonprofits and corporations.

Prior to founding BlueLabs, Daniel was Director of Statistical Modeling for the 2012 Obama reelection campaign. His team developed individual level statistical models that were used throughout the campaign for fundraising, media buying and state strategy. These models served two primary purposes: to pinpoint which voters were most likely to take an action or hold a belief (i.e. support the President or turn out to vote) as well as to measure the influence a campaign contact had on an individual's likelihood to take such actions or change their beliefs. Combined, these measures helped the campaign optimize their targeting to maximize their return on investment.

Dr. Jennifer Lewis Priestley, Ph.D., is a Professor of Applied Statistics and Data Science at Kennesaw State University, where she is the Director of the Center for Statistics and Analytical Services. She oversees the Ph.D. Program in Advanced Analytics and Data Science, and teaches courses in Applied Statistics at the undergraduate, Masters and Ph.D. levels. In 2012, the SAS Institute recognized Dr. Priestley as the 2012 Distinguished Statistics Professor of the Year. She served as the 2012 and 2015 Co-Chair of the National Analytics Conference. Datanami recognized Dr. Priestley as one of the top 12 "Data Scientists to Watch in 2016."

She has authored dozens of articles on Binary Classification, Risk Modeling, Sampling, Applications of Statistical Methodologies for Problem Solving as well as several textbook manuals for Excel, SAS, JMP and Minitab. Prior to receiving a Ph.D. in Statistics, Dr. Priestley worked in the Financial Services industry for 11 years. Her positions included Vice President of Business Development for VISA EU in London, where she was responsible for developing the consumer credit markets for Irish and Scottish banks. She also worked for MasterCard International as a Vice President for Business Development, where she was responsible for banking relationships in the Southeastern US. She also held positions with AT&T Universal Card and with Andersen Consulting.

Dr. Priestley received an MBA from The Pennsylvania State University, where she was president of the graduate student body, and a BS from Georgia Tech. She also received a certification from the ABA Bankcard School in Norman, OK, and a Certification in Base SAS Programming, and a Business Analyst Certification from the SAS Institute.

Tauseef Rahman is a principal in Mercer's Workforce Strategy & Analytics practice. He is responsible for developing and delivering projects which enable organizations for growth through the use of analytics which combine engagement, career, and rewards information.

Dean Abbott is Co-Founder and Chief Data Scientist of SmarterHQ, and President of Abbott Analytics, Inc. in San Diego, California. Mr. Abbott is an internationally recognized data mining and predictive analytics expert with over two decades of experience applying advanced data mining algorithms, data preparation techniques, and data visualization methods to real-world problems, including fraud detection, risk modeling, text mining, personality assessment, response modeling, survey analysis, planned giving, and predictive toxicology.

Mr. Abbott is the author of Applied Predictive Analytics (Wiley, 2014) and co-author of IBM SPSS Modeler Cookbook (Packt Publishing, 2013). He is a highly-regarded and popular speaker at Predictive Analytics and Data Mining conferences and meetups, and is on the Advisory Boards for the UC/Irvine Predictive Analytics Certificate as well as the UCSD Data Mining Certificate programs.

He has a B.S. in Mathematics of Computation from Rensselaer (1985) and a Master of Applied Mathematics from the University of Virginia (1987).

I am also the co-author (with the illustrator Grady Klein) of cartoon books about economics, calculus, and climate change. I was the founder and co-chair of the first-ever carbon tax ballot measure in the USA, the revenue-neutral Initiative 732 campaign in Washington State in 2016. Richard Boire's experience in predictive analytics and data science dates back to 1983, when he received an MBA from Concordia University in Finance and Statistics. 

His initial experience at organizations such as Reader’s Digest and American Express allowed  him to become a pioneer in the application of predictive modelling technology for all database and CRM type marketing programs. This extended to the introduction of models which targeted the acquisition of new customers based on return on investment.

With this experience, Richard formed his own consulting company back in 1994 which is now called the Boire Filler Group, a Canadian leader in offering  analytical and database services to companies seeking solutions to their existing predictive analytics or database marketing challenges.

Richard is a recognized authority on predictive analytics and is among a very few, select top five experts in this field in Canada, with expertise and knowledge that is difficult, if not impossible to replicate in Canada. This expertise has evolved into international speaking assignments and workshop seminars in the U.S., England, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia. 

Within Canada, he gives seminars on segmentation and predictive analytics for such organizations as Canadian Marketing Association (CMA), Direct Marketing News, Direct Marketing Association Toronto, Association for Advanced Relationship Marketing (AARM) and Predictive Analytics World (PAW).  His written articles have appeared in numerous Canadian  publications such as  Direct Marketing News, Strategy Magazine, and Marketing Magazine. He has taught applied statistics, data mining and database marketing at a variety of institutions across Canada which include University of Toronto, George Brown College, Seneca College, and currently Centennial College. Richard was  Chair at the CMA's Customer Insight and Analytics Committee and  sat on the CMA's Board of Directors from 2009-2012. He has chaired numerous full day conferences on behalf of the CMA (the 2000 Database and Technology Seminar as well as the  2002 Database and Technology Seminar and the first-ever Customer Profitability Conference  in 2005. He has most recently chaired the Predictive Analytics World conferences in both 2013 and 2014 which were held in Toronto.

He has co-authored white papers on the following topics: "Best Practices in Data Mining" as well as "Customer Profitability:  The State of Evolution among Canadian Companies."  In Oct. of 2014, his new book on "Data Mining for Managers-How to use Data (Big and Small) to Solve Business Problems" was published by Palgrave Macmillian.  In March of 2016, Boire Filler Group was acquired by Environics Analytics where his current role is senior vice-president of innovation.

Max was a Director of Nonclinical Statistics at Pfizer Global R&D in Connecticut. He was applying models in the pharmaceutical and diagnostic industries for over 18 years. Max is the author of eight R packages for techniques in machine learning and reproducible research and is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Statistical Software. He, and Kjell Johnson, wrote the book Applied Predictive Modeling, which won the Ziegel award from the American Statistical Association, which recognizes the best book reviewed in Technometrics in 2015.

He has worked on several Microsoft products including Internet Explorer and Bing. James has a PhD in cognitive psychology and computational statistics from the University of Southern California, a BA in psychology, a BA in applied mathematics, and an MS in computer science. 

James learned to speak to the public while working at Disneyland as a college student, and he can still recite the entire Jungle Cruise ride narration from memory.

Syed Mehmud, ASA, MAAA, FCA, is a Principal and Senior Consulting Actuary in the Denver office of Wakely. Syed is a recognized expert on risk adjustment and actuarial applications of predictive modeling. Through the combination of large scale actuarial projects and developing popular product offerings, Syed has served most health plans in the United States in some capacity. He has worked on a variety of healthcare related projects, particularly involving the application of risk adjustment tools and implementation of risk adjustment methodologies.

Syed has worked on risk adjustment with clients in Medicare, Medicaid, and Commercial settings. His recent work includes a large-scale actuarial consulting engagement where the Wakely team simulated the HHS risk adjustment methodology in over 30 individual and small group markets across the United States. His other works include the conception and development of the Wakely Risk Assessment (WRA) model, advanced Risk Score Optimization (RSO) analytics, the Wakely RAPID program, and the Wakely Risk Insight (WRI) program.

Most recently, Syed and his team have executed an on-going national-scale project aimed at understanding the drivers of success and challenges in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) program. The Wakely Risk Insight – National Reporting (WRINR) project is a unique lens on the ACA program in that it uses detailed data on millions of ACA lives in order to uncover insights related to succeeding in this program.

Syed co-authored (with Ross Winkelman) the 2007 Society of Actuaries' study on the comparative assessment of risk assessment models. Syed led a 2012 Society of Actuaries’ study on Uncertainty in Risk Adjustment. His other major published works include Society of Actuaries research project titled 'Non-Traditional Predictors in Risk Assessment' (SOA, 2013), and Risk Scoring in Health Insurance – A Primer (SOA, 2016). He is also in the process of writing a book on predictive modeling.

Mr. Abbott is an internationally recognized data mining and predictive analytics expert with over two decades of experience applying advanced data mining algorithms, data preparation techniques, and data visualization methods to real-world problems, including fraud detection, risk modeling, text mining, personality assessment, response modeling, survey analysis, planned giving, and predictive toxicology.

Mr. Abbott is the author of Applied Predictive Analytics (Wiley, 2014) and co-author of IBM SPSS Modeler Cookbook (Packt Publishing, 2013). He is a highly-regarded and popular speaker at Predictive Analytics and Data Mining conferences and meetups, and is on the Advisory Boards for the UC/Irvine Predictive Analytics Certificate as well as the UCSD Data Mining Certificate programs.

Pranjal Daga is a Data Scientist focused on strategizing and developing Deep Learning Proof of Concepts at Cisco Services Machine Learning R&D. He graduated from Purdue University with a Masters in Computer Science, specializing in Deep Learning and NLP. In the past, Pranjal has worked with researchers at Adobe Research, University of Alberta, Northwestern University, IBM Research and MIT. He has spent the past few years exploring new technologies, hacking on the quirky side projects and bringing together his research and engineering experiences. To understand the practical aspects of identifying business ideas and moving them forward, Pranjal recently joined Stanford Graduate School of Business' Ignite program. 

On a side for fun, Pranjal loves building new things from scratch, which is why he's been a regular participant in hackathons. He likes to travel and has recently developed a fascination with sunsets and the effects pollution has on their colors.

Assistant Professor of Finance and Statistics

Matthew Dixon is an Assistant Professor of Finance and Statistics at the Illinois Institute of Technology. His research in computational methods for finance is funded by Intel. Matthew began his career in structured credit trading at Lehman Brothers in London before pursuing academics and consulting for financial institutions in quantitative trading and risk modeling. He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Imperial College (2007) and has held postdoctoral and visiting professor appointments at Stanford University and UC Davis respectively. He has published over 20 peer reviewed publications on machine learning and financial modeling, has been cited in Bloomberg Markets and the Financial Times as an AI in fintech expert, and is a frequently invited speaker in Silicon Valley and on Wall Street. He has published R packages, served as a Google Summer of Code mentor and is the co-founder of the Thalesians.

    Dr. Garberson develops machine learning algorithms to screen for childhood cognitive conditions such as autism at Cognoa. This development work ranges from analyses to identify and compensate for defects in data that will be used in machine learning to development and optimization of the algorithms to analyzing clinical study results to validate the performance of the algorithms in real life. 

    Prior to joining Cognoa, Dr. Garberson spent two years developing machine learning algorithms for energy and consumer comfort optimization in smart thermostats at a startup called EcoFactor. Before that he ran analyses on petabytes of data collected at particle colliders, including the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, to search for statistically significant evidence of new fundamental particles and to perform more precise measurements of the properties of existing particles.

    Luba received her master's in analytics from the University of San Francisco and her bachelors in both applied math and economics from Berkeley. Before her current position in academic research, she gained industry experience in analytics consulting, high frequency trading analysis, catastrophe risk modeling, and quantitative marketing.     Kate Highnam has a background in Computer Science and Business, focusing on security, embedded devices, and accounting. At the University of Virginia, her thesis was a published industrial research paper containing an attack scenario and repair algorithm for drones deployed on missions with limited ground control contact. After joining Capital One as a Data Engineer, Kate has developed features within an internal DevOps Pipeline and Data Lake governance system. Currently, she builds machine learning models to assist cybersecurity experts and enhance defenses.

    Senior Technology (Finance ) Consultant

    Dr. Kelly is currently a Wolfram Technology Consultant, specifically consulting with Wolfram Finance Platform. He has given innumerable seminars on the use of Mathematica in finance. He has used Mathematica and Microsoft Excel to set up financial databases, construct mathematical and statistical models of trading data, write code to simulate newly devised trading strategies, write interface code to communicate with the trading platform to institute automated trading, analyze the PNL of trades, write research reports, evaluate options and futures prices, and implement trading strategies. 

    Dr. Kelly was a senior lecturer in mathematics in the School of Quantitative Methods and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Western Sydney (UWS), transferring in 2000 to the position of senior lecturer in finance in the School of Economics and Finance. Dr Kelly has since moved to Chicago, and until 2007 was associate professor of finance at the Stuart Graduate School of Business, Illinois Institute of Technology. In this capacity he taught two streams of courses: financial modeling and computational finance, using Mathematica, Matlab and Excel for master’s and PhD students. Following his teaching career, Dr. Kelly was employed as the research director for DB Trading and Unetich Trading LLC at the Chicago Board of Trade, as well as financial consultant to a number of investment firms and trading companies.

    Ricky Loynd is a member of the reinforcement learning research group in the Microsoft Research AI labs in Redmond, Wash. He has 25 years of experience with neural networks, and 11 years of experience in reinforcement learning. Ricky is currently focused on creating deep RL agents with more general, human-like intelligence. As a lead mentor for the Microsoft AI School Advanced Projects course, Ricky has helped teams throughout the company incorporate deep learning systems into their work.

    James McCaffrey works for Microsoft Research in Redmond, Wash. James explores applied deep machine learning and artificial intelligence. He has worked on several Microsoft products including Internet Explorer and Bing. James has a PhD in cognitive psychology and computational statistics from the University of Southern California, a BA in psychology, a BA in applied mathematics, and an MS in computer science. 

    James learned to speak to the public while working at Disneyland as a college student, and he can still recite the entire Jungle Cruise ride narration from memory.

    Dr. Nalini Polavarapu has been with Monsanto for over ten years, and manages a global team of analytical and IT professionals, specialized in machine learning, operations research and cloud analytics to deliver better products to market faster through data science. Data science activities range from inventing cognitive systems to enhance decision making, predictive and prescriptive analytics to automate/augment decisions, geo-spatial and image analytics to realize precision farming, and analytics to increase operational efficiency.

    Nalini also serves as the senior leader on the Data Science Center of Excellence Council partnering with other senior leaders enterprise wide to drive the efforts to realize the vision of transforming into a digital company through data science. Activities include implementing an enterprise wide talent and community development strategy, scalable technology platforms, best practices for development and deployment of analytical solutions and portfolio management.

    Over the course of her career, Nalini held positions of increasing levels of leadership responsibilities managing teams operating across geographies in Americas, EMEA, Asia and Africa, and has successfully established and led an off-shore center in India. She also initiated multiple external partnerships and collaborations with start-ups, large corporations and universities. Being the first data scientist at Monsanto, Nalini played a key role in building a world-class global data science organization which is now at 100+ and growing through hiring and development of data scientists, data science leaders, as well as positions of seniority within the groups.

    Nalini is the recipient of highest awards in technology for four consecutive years and a Fellow.

    Nalini has a PhD and dual Masters in Computer Science and Bioinformatics from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. Nalini has authored and co-authored several analytical patents, research articles in leading scientific journals and co-authored book chapters on high throughput data analysis and applications.

    Domenic Puzio is a Machine Learning Engineer with Koto, the national security division of Kensho Technologies. He graduated from the University of Virginia with degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science. He spends his time building and productionizing machine learning models that use natural language processing and deep learning for problems ranging from document classification to the detection of malware and phishing. He is a contributor to two Apache projects.

    Mike serves as Head of Data Science at Uber ATG, UC Berkeley Data Science faculty, and head of Skymind Labs the Machine Learning research lab affiliated with DeepLearning4J.  He has led teams of Data Scientists in the bay area as Chief Data Scientist for InterTrust, Director of Data Sciences for MetaScale/Sears, and CSO for Galvanize where he founded the galvanizeU-UNH accredited Masters of Science in Data Science degree and oversaw the company's transformation from co-working space to Data Science organization.  Mike began his career in academia serving as a mathematics teaching fellow for Columbia University before teaching at the University of Pittsburgh. His early research focused on developing the epsilon-anchor methodology for resolving both an inconsistency he highlighted in the dynamics of Einstein’s general relativity theory and the convergence of “large N” Monte Carlo simulations in Statistical Mechanics’ universality models of criticality phenomena.
