Wise Practitioner – Predictive Analytics Interview Series: Dave Chan at Informa / UBM

By: Eric Siegel, Founder, Predictive Analytics World for Business

In anticipation of his upcoming conference presentation at Predictive Analytics World for Business Las Vegas, June 16-20, 2019, we asked Dave Chan, Vice President, Digital Innovation & Business Intelligence at Informa / UBM, a few questions about their deployment of predictive analytics. Catch a glimpse of his presentation, Automated Machine Learning for the Event Industry, and see what’s in store at the PAW Business conference in Las Vegas.

Q: In your work with predictive analytics, what behavior or outcome do your models predict?

A: One of the predictive analytics use case is on trade validation, to determine if we should approve an individual’s application to attend an event.

Q: How does predictive analytics deliver value at your organization – what is one specific way in which it actively drives decisions or operations?

A: The original process is manual, where a team will conduct online research to determine if an application is valid. As the number of applications for each event can be in the thousands, the manual approach is not scalable. The trade validation model automates the application approval process by reducing number of applications to be manually reviewed.

Q: Can you describe a quantitative result, such as the predictive lift of your model or the ROI of an analytics initiative?

A: The current trade valuation model has more than 90% accuracy, using Area Under the ROC curve.

Q: What surprising discovery or insight have you unearthed in your data?

A: Just a few strong features is enough to provide a high impact model.

Q: Sneak preview: Please tell us a take-away that you will provide during your talk at Predictive Analytics World.

A: Having an automated decision making system could make better use of the limited resources available and be more objective in decision-making.
